Summary of report content
Healthwatch Kent wanted to explore the difficulties families face when accessing support for their children who may be autistic. They used a survey to collect views from 127 people and conducted interviews with three families and education staff specialising in supporting young people with autism.
The report found that young people felt they did not get enough information when they were diagnosed. Parents also wanted training offered to them much earlier. Additionally, parents felt that high functioning autism was not addressed in schools. There is much confusion regarding the referral process, and parents were unsure who to speak to regarding a referral. Although, when referrals are made, there is no acknowledgment of the paperwork.
Healthwatch Kent made three recommendations for children and young people's experiences, for parents and carers, for schools and for professionals.
