86-year old volunteer dedicates over 250 hours to helping make services better

25/07/17

Local people’s views on health and social care are heard thanks to Betty, 86

Betty is one of Healthwatch Leeds’ longest standing volunteers and has dedicated over 250 hours of her time to helping improve health and social care services for her local community.

She visits services across Leeds to find out what people think of them. Betty represents Healthwatch Leeds in a number of different forums and works to remind professionals that people should be at the heart of plans affecting the care available.

As a member of the Patient, Carer and Public Involvement Forum at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, she’s contributed to improvements to people’s care, and she’s helped ensure that ward areas and clinics are comfortable and offer ‘home comforts’.

When patients with cystic fibrosis shared their concerns about the lack of daylight in their ward at Leeds Teaching Hospital, Betty worked with the sister on the ward to make things better. She raised £1,000 for the ward and with a donation from a local charity they were able to purchase a light box.

Thanks to Betty, people’s views are being listened to and acted upon. #ItStartsWithYou

#ItStartsWithYou

The more that people share their ideas, experiences and concerns about NHS and social care, the more services can understand when improvements are needed. But, to make the biggest difference, we need to hear from more people.

You can make a difference. Find out more about our #ItStartsWithYou campaign or share your experience with your local Healthwatch and help make services better for your community. It starts with you.
